A CT (computerised tomography) scan uses x-rays to take a series of detailed images of the body.

The scanning couch moves up and through the doughnut shaped scanner taking pictures as it travels through. It is NOT a tunnel scanner like MRI. Some CT scans require you to be given a contrast agent, this will be indicated on your appointment letter and information can be seen in the leaflet provided with this letter.

The CT Department is open 24 hours a day and provides a service to many patient pathways throughout the hospital such as from the emergency department, outpatients and inpatients.

CT trained Radiographers undertake your scan, and your results will be with your referrer within 7 to 10 days.
