Get the right treatment when you need it.
Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments are extremely busy treating high numbers of patients.
This service is for those who need it most – like people with severe chest pains, serious head injuries, loss of consciousness or breathing difficulties.
Please help us by using an alternative service if you have a less serious condition.
Think 111 first for non-emergencies
111 is the NHS non-emergency number. It’s fast, easy and free. Call 111 or visit 111 online and speak to a highly trained adviser, supported by healthcare professionals. They will ask you a series of questions to assess your symptoms and immediately direct you to the best medical care for you.
Your local community pharmacist can give expert healthcare advice as well as over-the-counter medicines that can help with lots of common conditions such as diarrhoea, a runny nose, a cough or a headache – without the need for an appointment.
Pharmacy First
You can also get treatment, including antibiotics and antivirals where clinically appropriate, for seven common conditions directly from your local pharmacy, without the need for a GP appointment or prescription.
What are the seven common conditions?
- Sinusitis
- Sore throat
- Earache
- Infected insect bite
- Impetigo (a bacterial skin infection)
- Shingles
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women.
How can I access treatment from my pharmacy?
You can get treatment for these conditions by walking into the pharmacy or contacting them virtually. GP receptionists, NHS 111 and providers of emergency care will also be able to direct patients to pharmacies that offer the service.
If you have an illness or injury that won’t go away, including persistent vomiting, ear pain, stomach ache or back ache, make an appointment with your GP practice.
You can contact most GP practices online, by app as well as by phone.
If your surgery is closed, call 111. A call to 111 will direct you to the out of hours care services.
Emergency Departments are for those who need it most – like people with severe chest pains, serious head injuries, loss of consciousness or breathing difficulties.
