New ‘blood spinning’ treatment hailed by first Kent patient

A new and innovative ‘blood spinning’ treatment for painful orthopaedic problems like arthritis and tennis elbow has launched at Medway NHS Foundation Trust.

The procedure is described as a form of ‘’regenerative’’ medicine and involves taking a small sample of blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate and separate the platelets and plasma. This concentrated solution is then injected back into the body at the injury site to boost the natural healing process.

It is being used as an alternative to steroids for patients at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham – the only site in Kent to offer the treatment.

The first patient to undergo the treatment, Jhoel De Jesus, 47, from Chatham, says he has noticed ‘’major improvements’’ after being diagnosed with tennis elbow and suffering pain in his arm for two years.

Jhoel said: “I am extremely proud and privileged to be the first patient to receive this new treatment. It has helped me a lot – since the procedure I have felt much better and seen major improvements with my elbow.

“I was keen to avoid taking steroids and other strong painkillers, and the procedure was right for me. In total the injections took just one hour and I was back at home the same day to continue my recovery. I would definitely recommend this service to other suitable patients.

“I thank all the staff at Medway, including Professor Bijay Singh, for their care and treatment and for improving my quality of life.”

Professor Bijay Singh, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, added: “We are proud to be able to provide these platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to help patients in Kent and Medway and it is great to hear such positive feedback.

“The regenerative properties of the platelets target towards the injury site and help repair and regenerate damaged tissue, accelerating the body’s own healing process.”
