Porter Shannon O’Kane is the one of five finalists chosen by the award sponsor, Kent Messenger for the Hospital Hero Award.
This is one of 11 awards being presented at next week’s Medway Annual Star Awards. Nominated by the public, the award recognises a hospital worker who has done something extraordinary or made a real difference to patients’ lives, or their friends or family.
Our fourth finalist, 20-year-old Shannon, who joined Medway Maritime Hospital a year ago after being encouraged by a friend, said: “I’m a people person – I just love being around people, talking with them and interacting with everyone.
“I’ve learnt so many different things – people don’t realise how much a porter actually does in a hospital.”
Nominated by a member of the public, Shannon’s nomination read: “Doctors, surgeons and nurses all play a very important role in saving lives daily. Porters can be overlooked sometimes.
“Shannon is always delivering care throughout every single shift whether it be night or day. She delivers excellent service with compassion for patients and also condolences for family and friends if the worst is to happen.
“She is a young girl in her early 20’s but is so mature and headstrong for her age, always making sure she is professional but caring for others at the same time.”
Moved by the nomination, Shannon added: “I don’t know where my nomination has come from, I speak to so many people in a day.
“I’ll walk someone from one end of the hospital to the other and we can have the most random conversations and that’s clearly had an impact on someone.
“If I was lucky enough to win, it would stick with me for life.”
