Our Hospital Hero Award is nominated by the public and recognises a hospital worker who has done something extraordinary or made a real difference to patients’ lives, or their friends or family. It is one of 11 awards to be presented at next month’s Medway Annual Star Awards.
The Hospital Hero Award sponsor, Kent Messenger, have chosen five finalists out of the many fantastic nominations received.
Dr Saadia Shah, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, is the second of the finalists.
Nominated by the husband and father of a patient who was life-threateningly unwell, Dr Shah was nominated for saving the woman’s life.
Having already worked a 12-hour shift, Dr Shah remained at the hospital long beyond her shift had ended, went back into theatre and saved the patient’s life.
In his award nomination, the patient’s father said: “I’ll be forever grateful that Dr Shah turned around that night and didn’t go home. She is the reason my wife and I still have a daughter and my beautiful grandson will grow up with a wonderful mum.
He added, “I can’t thank her enough; her skill and dedication saved my daughter’s life. Her warmth as a person and modesty at what she did that night was humbling.”
Saadia said: “It’s very nice to be appreciated for the work you are doing – I don’t expect even a thanks or anything because I think it’s part of my job.
“When I took up medicine as a career, I always remember the advice my parents gave me. When looking after patients, reverse the roles, how would you like to be treated.
“So I try my best to look after all my patients.
“When I received the email telling me I had been nominated, I had to read it twice to believe it. I felt quite emotional. I’m really grateful.”
