To mark Allied Health Professionals’ (AHPs) Day on Monday 14 October, we are celebrating some of our AHP colleagues who make up the third largest workforce in the NHS.
Here at Medway we employ Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dietetic Assistants, Therapy Assistants, Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) and Radiographers, plus one Speech and Language Therapist in neonates.
Introducing Victoria Hunt, Senior Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist
“I am a physiotherapist working on the cardio-respiratory and general medical wards.
“I joined Medway as a Therapy Assistant in 2019 while in my final year of my Physiotherapy degree following an enjoyable orthopaedic placement here during my studies. I then joined as a newly qualified physiotherapist in 2020.
“I review patients admitted to hospital with an exacerbation of an existing or new respiratory condition or a cardiac event.
“I help patients to manage their symptoms, such as breathlessness, so that they can be safely leave hospital and continue to live as independently as possible.
“I became interested in physiotherapy when my grandad sadly suffered a stroke that significantly impacted his mobility and ability to live independently. This inspired me to want to help him, and others that are sadly in his position, to regain as much independence as possible to improve their quality of life.
“I love seeing and supporting patients to achieve their goals, while working closely with colleagues from different healthcare professions. It’s great to see how all our roles come together to support patients recover.
“While it can be difficult seeing patients admitted to hospital when they become unwell, knowing that I can use my knowledge, experience and skills to support them through a particularly difficult and vulnerable time in their life is an honour and something that I will always be proud of.
“If helping people regain or maintain their independence while in hospital is something that interests you, then a career in physiotherapy or occupational therapy might be the career opportunity for you.”
