Congratulations go to the Medway League of Friends for being certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Neutral Britain scheme for the third year running.
The Friends run the First Rate Café and Shop in Medway Maritime Hospital, which underwent a major refurbishment in the summer of 2023.
Scott Belcher, Medway League of Friends Operations Manager, said: “It is really great news we have been certified carbon neutral for the third year in a row. The survey that forms the bulk of the assessment process gives us a chance to look back and see where we can improve the sustainability of our charity moving forwards.
“During 2023, we produced 23.82 tonnes of CO2, a 30 per cent reduction on the previous 12 months. This was offset by supporting a range of woodland management, forest creation and planting projects in the UK.”
Since the survey was completed, the Friends have continued to look for ways to further reduce their impact.
Scott added: “With the help of the hospital’s Catering Team we are now able to recycle the nine tonnes of ground coffee waste we produce every year. This is in addition to the recycling already carried out and the elimination of single use plastic including in our coffee cups and lids, which are entirely plastic free.”
The Medway League of Friends has been supporting Medway Maritime Hospital for more than 60 years. The League is a registered charity and is a volunteer-led group who dedicate their time to raising vital funds for local health services.
